Trevor Van Laar for GUSD Trustee Area 4

Invested in Gilroy.
Committed to Our Schools.

I am running to represent Trustee Area 4 on the Gilroy Unified School District Board because I believe in our students, our educators, and the future of our schools. After nearly two decades as a GUSD parent and years of service in our schools and community, I am ready to listen, collaborate, and make thoughtful decisions that help every student thrive.

Rooted in Gilroy. Invested in Our Schools.

My wife and I made a conscious decision to invest in Gilroy by not only living here, but by getting to know our neighbors, participating in community events, and serving organizations that strengthen our city.

Our four children have grown up in Gilroy Unified schools. Three have graduated, and our youngest currently attends Gilroy High School. Along the way, they have participated in dual immersion, FFA, BSA, swimming, water polo, track, volleyball, band, and many other programs that make GUSD such an important part of our community.

For 17 years, I have experienced our schools as a parent, volunteer, coach, committee member, and community partner. By the time our youngest graduates, our family will have spent nearly 20 years in GUSD. I am running because I want to give back to the district that has given our family so much and because I am genuinely excited about what GUSD can become.

Vision

Responsible investment in students

We must responsibly balance the district’s long-term financial stability with the needs of students and staff today. That means transparent budgeting, careful use of reserves, and a serious effort to identify sustainable new sources of revenue.

Safe, modern, future-ready schools

Students and staff deserve facilities that are safe, clean, functional, and designed for the future. We must address deferred maintenance before routine problems become costly emergencies and ensure that facility investments support the learning environments our students need.

Recruit, support, and retain great staff

Consistent, qualified staff are essential to student success. GUSD must improve compensation, recruiting, workload support, and career pathways—especially for teachers, paraeducators, psychologists, speech-language pathologists, education specialists, and other hard-to-fill positions.
